A new flat requires deadly power outlets for the homeserver

The new homeserver had to be moved into my new flat too but there was only limited space. Also it made a lot of noises with the fans, therefore it could not stay in our living room or my sleeping room. The flat had a small storage room, where most of its area was taken away by a chimney and it smelled like somebody was smoking in there for years.

The placement looks absolutely crazy…

The main problem in there was, that there was no power outlet. The bulb had 230V but no earth connection, but devices with a metal enclousure really should be grounded to avoid shocks if there is ever voltage touching the housing. Since I did not want to have the chance of dying everytime I have to do maintenance, I chose to connect earth of the homeserver to neutral of the bulb, and to use a small 5mA power plug earth leakage circuit breaker. This will make sure that the supply voltage is cutoff whenever there is current flowing back to “earth” (= neutral after the plug adapter).

The only thing that could kill me now is that if neutral and phase are switched for the bulb, deadly phase would be directly connected to the housing of the server. Lets hope that the city never switches the polarity of the AC grid 🙂

Power consumption stayed round about the same in the new flat:
